Whole Chicken in the Crockpot

Whole Chicken in the Crockpot

A 4–5 lb whole chicken takes 6–7 hours on LOW or 3–4 hours on HIGH in a crockpot, until it reads 165°F in the thigh.

Crockpots cook by gentle, even heat rather than high direct heat, so there's no way to crisp the skin inside one — that's the tradeoff for hands-off, fall-apart meat. If crispy skin matters, finish it 5–10 minutes under a broiler after the crockpot is done.

Quick questions

Do you need liquid to cook a whole chicken in a crockpot?

Not much — the chicken releases its own juices as it cooks. A splash of broth (1/4 to 1/2 cup) in the bottom is enough; drowning it steams the meat instead of slow-roasting it.

Can I get crispy skin from a crockpot chicken?

Not in the crockpot itself. Broil it for 5–10 minutes after slow cooking if crispy skin matters to you.
